How to cleaning your saltwater chlorinator cell

If you own a saltwater pool, then you know the importance of a saltwater chlorinator cell. This component is responsible for producing chlorine from the saltwater and keeping your pool clean and safe for swimming. However, over time, the cell can become filled with calcium and other mineral deposits, which can restrict the flow of water and inhibit chlorine production. If you neglect cleaning your saltwater chlorinator cell, it can lead to higher maintenance costs and reduced performance. Here are some tips on how to clean your saltwater chlorinator cell and keep it functioning optimally.

1. Turn off the Power

Before you start cleaning your saltwater chlorinator cell, it’s important to turn off the power to the cell. This will help prevent any electrocution or damage to the cell and ensure your safety. You can switch off the power either at the circuit breaker or the control panel of your pool.

2. Remove the Cell

The next step is to remove the saltwater chlorinator cell from the pool. Locate the cell in your pool’s plumbing system and unscrew it from the pipes. Be careful not to damage any of the parts or the cell itself during this process. Once the cell is removed, place it in a safe and secure place where you can perform the cleaning process.

3. Create a Cleaning Solution

Now you’re ready to create a cleaning solution to clean the saltwater chlorinator cell. You can use a mixture of 1 part water to 1 part muriatic acid or white vinegar. Both of these solutions are effective at removing mineral deposits from the cell. However, if you choose to use muriatic acid, make sure you wear appropriate protective gear, including gloves and goggles.

4. Soak the Cell in the Solution

Once the cleaning solution is ready, place the saltwater chlorinator cell in a container and pour the solution over it. Make sure the cell is completely submerged in the solution to ensure a thorough cleaning. Allow the cell to soak in the solution for at least 30 minutes or until all the mineral deposits have dissolved.

5. Rinse the Cell

After the cell has soaked in the cleaning solution, it’s time to rinse it thoroughly with water. Use a garden hose or a pressure washer to remove all traces of the cleaning solution. Make sure you rinse the cell thoroughly to avoid any damage to the cell or any residue left over.

6. Reinstall the Cell

Now that your saltwater chlorinator cell is clean.
